Actor’s Tools: Creating and Performing Character (Session 1)

This class invites students to identify, explore, and integrate the fundamental tools necessary for creating authentic characters and performing them onstage. Activate the body, exercise the voice, analyze text, engage the imagination, and increase your focus. This class culminates in a sharing of monologues with your peers. Memorization is expected.

Teaching Artist: Beth Hylton
Beth Hylton (she/her) is an actor and teaching artist with over 30 years of professional stage experience. Her teaching and coaching work includes voice and text workshops with The Ground Floor Theatre Lab in NYC (of which Beth was a founding ensemble member), Shakespeare text and performance for HS students, acting for non majors at UNC-Chapel Hill while in pursuit of her graduate degree, and many classes through Everyman’s Education Department, as well as personal acting coaching, online and in person. She is inspired by watching actors make discoveries, and the expanding consciousness of the rooms when true collaboration takes place. As a director, she has helmed numerous readings through Everyman’s Reading Series, workshop performances, and co-produced for many years The Actors Salon in Washington DC, which showcased rarely produced American classics in event settings.

Teaching Artist: Joseph W. Ritsch
Joseph W. Ritsch (they/them) is a director, choreographer, playwright and theatre educator who served as Producing Artistic Director at Rep Stage from 2014-2023. Selected directing credits include Venus in Fur, Dorian’s Closet, All She Must Possess, Sweeney Todd, The 39 Steps, Souvenir, E2, Songs for a New World, and Falsettos (Rep Stage). Machinal, The Amish Project, Small Mouth Sounds and The Grown up (UMBC Department of Theatre); Pride & Prejudice (Catholic University School of Drama); Spring Awakening (Towson University); the multiple Helen Hayes nominated production of OLIVER! (Adventure Theatre); The Understudy, The Importance of Being Earnest and the upcoming production of The Mystery of Irma Vep (Everyman Theatre.) He holds an MFA in Theatre from Towson University, a BA in Theater & Dance from The School of Performing Arts at The University of Maine and completed his initial graduate studies in the acting track at the Professional Program at Playwrights Horizons in New York City. Joseph is a proud member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) and is the Interim Director of Education at Everyman Theatre.
Playwriting

This class invites students who have a story to tell to develop the tools and confidence to share it. With a special focus on dialogue and scene development, you will script clear and compelling theatrical moments. Peers will read work, and you will engage in a critical response process.

Teaching Artist: Kimberly Lynne
Kimberley Lynne (she/her) is a playwright, screenwriter, short story fiction writer, and novelist. Lynne taught playwriting for Everyman in spring 2024 and will be teaching advanced screenwriting at Stevenson University in the fall. Lynne is a member of the Dramatist Guild, Actors Equity Association, and the International Society of Screenwriters, and forty of her plays have been produced at both the professional and community levels. She serves as the Artistic Director of Fells Point Corner Theatre and created a Salon Series so members can develop new work. Lynne is also a theatrical director and has been acting onstage for decades. She holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts. We encourage you to apply for a need-based scholarship by completing this FORM. Our need-based Creative Journey scholarship awards range to cover a portion of the tuition. While funding is limited, we work hard to accept as many students as possible throughout the year. Scholarship Applications can be submitted on a rolling basis.

FAQs
Once I purchase a class, what is my next step?
Once a class is purchased, Everyman Theatre’s Education Team will reach out with a Welcome email and Registration form at least one-week before the class starts. Please complete the registration form within three business days.
I am unable to take a program I purchased, what is Everyman’s education programs refund policy?
All class sales are final sale: This means there will be no refunds. No exceptions, unless one of the following applies:
Withdrawal from a class: While we know that plans shift, we strive to provide exceptional service and programming for all students. This includes attendance for ensemble building. If you must withdraw, you will receive a credit that can be used towards any class in our current season. Class credits expire on June 30th, of any given season or school year. Be sure to use them before this date.
Youth Summer Experiences: You are entitled to a partial refund of 50% of the class tuition if you withdraw at least one (1) month prior to the summer session’s start date.
Scholarship Recipients: Should you miss more than 3-class offering during any program offering your scholarship is awarded for, you will be removed from programming with no refund or class credit.

EMPOWER
These are entry-level courses meant to serve as an access point for budding artists who are looking to build their knowledge in theatre. These courses will provide students with foundational skills in theatre as they begin or continue their artistic journey. If you have never been involved in theatre before or taken a course in acting, EMPOWER classes are a great place to start.
LAB
Lab classes are designed for students of any experience level to explore and develop specific skillsets. These classes often highlight specific theatrical disciplines (i.e., Voice Acting or Directing). Whether you are new to theatre or an experienced artist, these courses are a great way to build up your skillset and try something new!
CRAFT
Classes in the Craft series are designed to provide students with formalized training, specifically focused on the skill of acting. While not required, these classes are intended for students with previous theatre experience or those who are looking to begin a career in theatre.
To maximize the educational experience of all students involved: Craft classes require students to memorize text, rehearse on their own time, and commit to attendance of as many classes (as possible).
The CRAFT series is on a pre-professional track; Our Education Team and your peers will appreciate your forward-thinking and commitment in planning accordingly.
Will there be a final performance?
We strive to ensure all students receive the opportunity to end any class progression with a culminating event or performance. To this end, many of our adult students will be given the opportunity to perform their work, whether that be in class or in our rehearsal hall. All Performances, at the level, are at the sole discretion of our Teaching Artists.
