2025/2026 SEASON BREAKDOWN
AUGUST WILSON’S THE PIANO LESSON
By August Wilson
Director: Paige Hernandez
First Rehearsal: 8/5/2025
Opening: 9/5/2025
Closing: 9/28/2025
SYNOPSIS
It is 1936, and Boy Willie arrives in Pittsburgh from the South in a battered truck loaded with watermelons to sell. He has an opportunity to buy some land down home, but he has to come up with the money right quick. He wants to sell a piano that has great importance to his family, but he shares ownership with his sister Berniece, and the piano sits in her living room. Berniece has already rejected several offers, because the antique piano is covered with beautiful carvings detailing the family’s rise from slavery. Boy Willie argues that the past is past, but Berniece proves to be more formidable than he anticipated.
SEEKING
- Grace (Female presenting – Black – 20s): A young, urban woman whom Boy Willie and Lymon each try to pick up.
- Maretha (Female presenting – Black – 11): Berniece’s daughter, Maretha is beginning to learn piano. She symbolizes the next generation of the Charles’ family, providing the occasion for a number of confrontations on what the family should do with its legacy.
- Wining Boy (Male presenting – Black – 50s): A washed-up recording star who drifts in and out of his brother Doaker’s household whenever he finds himself broke. He functions as one of the play’s primary storytellers, recounting anecdotes from his travels.
- Avery Brown (Male presenting – Black – Late 30s): A preacher who is trying to build his congregation, he moves north once Berniece’s husband dies in an attempt to court Berniece. He is honest, ambitious, and fervently religious. He brings Christian authority to bear in the exorcism of Sutter’s ghost.
- Lymon (Male presenting – Black – 30s): Boy Willie’s longtime friend; he is more taciturn than his partner, speaking with disarming straightforwardness. Fleeing the law, he plans to stay in the north and begin life anew. An outsider to the family, he functions particularly in the beginning of the play as a sort of listener, eliciting stories from the family’s past. Obsessed with women, he will also appear prominently in his seduction of Berniece, where he helps bring her out of her mourning for her dead husband.
NOTE: The following roles are CAST with Resident Acting Company. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:
- Berniece – CAST (Female presenting – Black – 30s): Sister of Boy Willie, she is a mother still in mourning for her husband, Crawley. She blames her brother for her husband’s death, remaining skeptical of his bravado and chiding him for his rebellious ways.
- Doaker Charles – CAST (Male presenting – Black – Late 40s): Berniece and Boy Willie’s uncle and the owner of the household in which the play takes place, he has spent his life working for the railroad. He functions as the play’s testifier, recounting the piano’s history.
- Boy Willie – CAST (Male presenting – Black – 30s): Berniece’s brash, impulsive, and fast-talking brother, he introduces the central conflict of the play. Coming from Mississippi, he plans to sell the family piano and buy the land his ancestors once worked as slaves. By selling the piano, he avenges his father, Boy Charles, who spent his life property-less.

Closing: 11/16/2025
SYNOPSIS
How much would you pay for a white painting? Would it matter who the painter was? Would it be art? One of Marc’s best friends, Serge, has just bought a very expensive painting. It’s about five feet by four, all white with white diagonal lines. To Marc, the painting is a joke, but Serge insists Marc doesn’t have the proper standard to judge the work. Another friend, Ivan, though burdened by his own problems, allows himself to be pulled into this disagreement.

SYNOPSIS

SEEKING
- Nancy (Female presenting – 20s): The young housemaid; her eye is on the main chance. Smart and perceptive, she thinks she sees an opportunity to outsmart everyone.

- Elizabeth – CAST (Female presenting – 55-70): The housekeeper; she is hard of hearing. A lifetime in service has taught her to remain as dutiful and discreet as possible, and to keep her opinions to herself except in extreme circumstances.

Based on the novel by Jane Austen
Director: Laura Kepley
First Rehearsal: 4/21/2026
Opening: 5/22/2026
Closing: 6/14/2026
SYNOPSIS
Emma Woodhouse is clever, educated, and energetic… and in imminent danger of going mad with idleness. In a time when respectable ladies are expected to sit quietly at home, she desperately needs projects — and prides herself on matchmaking, much to the chagrin of her friend Mr. Knightley. But where Emma’s considerable energies focus, screwball comedy follows… A fresh feminist take on a treasured classic, this Emma breaks down convention, expectation, and even the fourth wall with vibrant comic flair — leading audiences “forward, onward, and upward!”
SEEKING
NOTE: The following roles ARE CAST with Resident Acting Company. Performers will be considered as possible replacements should any become necessary:
- Emma Woodhouse – CAST (Female presenting – 25-35): She is almost unbelievably charming; a natural comedienne. Bouncily flirty; possesses more power of manipulation than even she understands; has a certain sunny, charming self-regard — it’s what allows her to get away with so much.
- Harriet Smith – CAST (Female presenting – 20s): She is a deeply likable girl from the lower classes, who’s been given a basic education. A sweet, naturally affectionate human being, but not the brightest flame in the stove.
- Jane Fairfax / Mrs. Elton / et al – CAST (Female presenting – 20s-30s): Jane is an overachiever. Very composed. Very beautiful. Very discreet. Very accomplished. Very smart. Mrs. Elton is not very bright. What’s more, she has a laugh that’s the auditory equivalent of nails being torn out of your fingers. Is delighted by everything. Her libido is quite active.
- Miss Bates/ et al – CAST (Female presenting – 45-55): She is headmistress of a struggling school for girls. An incredibly good-natured, if motor-mouthed and daft, woman. Very, very proud of her niece Jane Fairfax, whom she talks about obsessively. Once she starts talking, you can’t get a word in edgewise.
- Mrs. Weston / et al – CAST (Female presenting – 35-45): Emma’s former governess. A very smart woman with a good sense of humor; very perceptive and grounded. Not afraid to tell it like it is. Capable of really teaching deep lessons.
- Mrs. Bates / et al – CAST (Female presenting – 60s-70s): Mrs. Bates is an elderly lady, very opinionated, who communicates exclusively in grunts and hand gestures.
- George Knightley – CAST (Male presenting – 30s-40s): He is a handsome man; a super charming man; an upright fellow. He’s also a bit of a rule-follower; maybe sometimes a bit of a stick in the mud. Very clever. Capable of getting ahead of himself and edging towards know-it-all. Can be competitive. Is preoccupied with Emma — they get under each other’s skin in the most delightful way.
- Mr. Elton / Frank Churchill / Robert Martin – CAST (Male presenting – 20s-30s): Mr. Elton is a clergyman who sometimes gets the wrong idea. Adores poetry. A born social climber. Fancies himself a great romantic. Frank Churchill is an incredibly charming, handsome, mischievous flirt of a man — the kind of man who gets away with almost everything, because he’s so irresistible. Robert Martin is a sweet groundskeeper, in love with Harriet.
- Mr. Weston / Mr. Woodhouse – CAST (Male presenting – 45-60): Mr. Weston is the kind of man who likes to make awkward “dad jokes.” Very, very proud of his son, Frank Churchill. An unsubtle matchmaker. A good man, not a mean thought in his head. Mr. Woodhouse is an over-anxious, melancholy hypochondriac, but people humor him, as he’s a nice man under it all. Obsessed with the healing powers of gruel. Tends to darkly predict fatal illnesses as a sign of concern.
