ABOUT THE ARTIST
Haesuh Paik (b. 2003 Davis, CA) is a Korean painter based in Baltimore, MD. Often working from photos from her personal archive, Paik reconfigures familiar images through painting to explore the fluidity of memory and impermanence of lived experience. Her paintings inhabit the space between familiarity and uncertainty, where personal histories are continually reconstructed through the act of remembering. Paik completed the Summer Undergraduate Residency at the New York Academy of Art in 2024 and was awarded First Prize in the 2025 US AXA Art Prize. She received her BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2026.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I approach painting as a personal mode of translation. My process starts with a recollection of people, objects, and experiences that feel familiar: photographs of loved ones, an old payphone, a car ride at sunset, or the quietness of a short nap. Working primarily with oil, I reimagine these fragments of memory, allowing them to shift beyond their original contexts as they move onto the canvas.
Through this process, familiar images become slightly estranged. The paintings exist between recognition and uncertainty, retaining traces of their origins while resisting a fixed sense of place or meaning. They are both intimate and enigmatic, holding a tension between nostalgia and discovery, familiarity and transformation.
