SHAKESPEARE DECODED

Who is who in A Midsummer Night’s Dream?

Who are the ATHENIANS?
LYSANDER and HERMIA are eager to get married. But Hermia’s dad EGEUS can’t stand Lysander, and wants Hermia to marry DEMETRIUS. Except HELENA, DEMETRIUS ex, is HERMIA’s best friend!

  • THESEUS – Duke of Athens, engaged to Hippolyta.
  • HIPPOLYTA – Amazonian queen, engaged to Theseus.
  • PHILOSTRATE – Theseus’ Master of Revels.
  • EGEUS – An Athenian citizen and Hermia’s father.
  • HERMIA – Egeus’ daughter and Lysander’s love interest.
  • LYSANDER – Hermia’s beau.
  • DEMETRIUS – Hermia’s persistent suitor.
  • HELENA – Hermia’s best friend and Demetrius’ ex.

Who are the FAIRIES?
King OBERON and Queen TITANIA rule the enchanted forest. They’re crazy in love but combative and willful partners. PUCK, Oberon’s right-hand and champion prankster, accompanies them.

  • OBERON – King of the fairies, Titania’s husband.
  • TITANIA – Queen of the fairies, OBERON’s wife.
  • PUCK – A magical jokester fairy, Oberon’s attendant.
  • PEASBLOSSOM – Titania’s fairy attendant.
  • MUSTARDSEED – Titania’s fairy attendant.
  • COBWEB – Titania’s fairy attendant.
  • MOTH – Titania’s fairy attendant.

What are the MECHANICALS?
A zany group of amateur actors take time off from their day jobs to prepare their play Pyramus and Thisbe for the upcoming royal wedding. This is their big break, and they can feel it!

  • QUINCE / MOONSHINE – A carpenter and the director of Pyramus and Thisbe.
  • BOTTOM / PYRAMUS – A weaver and the star of the play-within-a-play.
  • FLUTE / THISBE – A bellows-mender and romantic lead actor.
  • SNOUT / WALL – A tinker and the wall separating true lovers.
  • SNUG / LION – A joiner and ferocious lion.

“It’s a joyful celebration, a rallying call to protect nature; finding or remembering your first love and unifying the different parts of ourselves that easily become imbalanced. It’s produced often because it always has something fresh to say about accessing your spirit.”
