WOMEN+ ON THE EDGE OF DEMOCRACY

Overview

Short Play Readings and Community Discussion

WE’RE BUILDING DEMOCRACY

October 26, 2026

Everyman is honored to be one of over 100 theatres and community organizations (and the ONLY theatre in Maryland!) participating in the Woman + on the Edge of Democracy project.

We are partnering with Coppin State University, Morgan State University and Lord Baltimore Hotel. Casts for the play readings will include theatre students from both Universities as well as our resident company member Megan Anderson and one of our star teaching artists Tarshai Peterson.

Our featured playwrights are: Lynn Nottage, Lauren M. Gunderson, Jenny Schwartz, and Paula Cizmar

Women+ on the Edge of Democracy was initiated and created by the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, one of New England’s most impactful arts organizations. This event is in partnership with The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize who has long recognized visionary women+ playwrights writing for the stage—artists whose voices have defined generations of contemporary theater. In this project, these playwrights have been invited to write a 10-minute play or monologue in response to the following urgent questions: What is the current state of democracy in America from a national and international perspective? And what can history, global context, or futurism offer us in this pivotal moment?

*The focus of the event is to create a space to engage students in art and discuss relevant topics on democracy as we near the mid-term elections. This event is CLOSED to the general public in an effort to create intentional space for the students. We will be sharing photos and further details post-event.
